One of the distinguishing features of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is its emphasis on positional dominance and the ability to submit an opponent without relying on strikes or kicks.

Practitioners aim to take their opponents to the ground and then use techniques like sweeps, escapes, and submissions to gain advantageous positions or force the opponent to submit. Training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu involves practicing techniques with partners in both drilling and live sparring sessions. BJJ practitioners often wear a gi (a traditional uniform consisting of a jacket and pants) during training and competitions, but there are also no-gi variations of the sport where practitioners wear shorts and a rash guard.
